Making the most of the outlook is a primary consideration for any beach-facing residence. This modern residence was designed by architect Brendon Gordon for a young Family in Papamoa.
With the sun in mind the garage is situated on the south side of the house leaving the bedrooms and living areas to capture all day sun. From the southern road view you are welcomed by an impressive architectural masterpiece. The contrast between the flat plastered ground floor stretching half way up into the upper floor before changing to stained timber weather boards and crowned with an unsymmetrical curved roof. Also situated on the south side is the internal stair case with a large window for nature light. The north-east elevation, a set of galvanized open treadplate exterior stairs lead up to a large curved entertaining deck with a Stainless Steel balustrade.
The deck is covered by the continuation of the curved roof for all weather family entertaining. The use of support braces allows the curved roof to cantilever over the deck without the need for posts restricting the view. The soffits over the deck area are clad in TG&V timber allowing it to be stained the same as the weather board cladding. The remainder of the soffits are painted charcoal to match the roof and fascia achieving a bold contrast to the cladding without adding additional colours.
The design initiative minimized the impact of the double-story element, and also allowed additional ceiling height above the Kitchen and living area – adding to its presence.
From the main deck, large windows span up toward the curved internal ceiling allowing natural light to filter across into the Kitchen and living areas and allowing the owners an unobstructed view of the adjacent reserve, dunes and sea. On the remainder of the upper floor are two kid’s bedrooms, bathroom, office and formal lounge.
The Master bedroom is located on the ground floor at the north-east end of the house with views out towards the reserve and sea. Direct access from the Master bedroom and kids play room is another large timber deck, directly below the main deck on the upper floor allowing a covered area for the kids to play in all weather. Another kid’s bedroom, laundry garage and work shop complete the ground floor.
