Architectural designer, Brendon Gordon, has framed the views looking out over the surrounding countryside to The Mount and harbour, and ocean and islands beyond, in numerous and creative ways. All five bedrooms, a large office space and four living areas, possess a different take on the scene.
On arrival, one is greeted by the full height of the three-level home. The 8m garage door. is one of the biggest in the region.
Garaging, laundry services and bathrooms have been worked into the high south-facing walls, which shield the home from the prevailing winds and winter cold.
There is also a single garage included on the basement level, to accommodate a ride on mower and implements away from family vehicles in the main garaging., but could just as easily store a boat, or vintage car, perhaps.
Once up the first flight of stairs, in contradiction to first appearances, all the graciousness any single-level dwelling offers is evident.
The living areas and the four downstairs bedrooms, on this main floor, have direct access to outdoor living of some kind. Decks, a courtyard, large flat lawns and a pool, provide numerous recreational options for a growing family. A tennis court is planned for next summer.
The sheltered courtyard at the front of the house, essentially, anchors the overall design concept. Its tall proportions counter-balance the height at the rear of the house.
The courtyard is closed in on three sides, with the ceiling at the height of the third level. The room comes complete with an open fire and a concrete block fire surround and chimney, which works its way up to reach the full..5.4metre height of the room. The fireplace is a dramatic inclusion and stands back-to-back with a similar one in the main living area.
A vast wall of stack bonded block work also features in the three story stairwell and gives a raw architectural feeling to the building. The house simultaneously projects an inviting and homely ambience.
“The stack bonded concrete block work took a lot of time to get right, it’s a major feature and at these heights it took some skill to execute due to the precision of the straight lines over the three levels “Todd says.
Many of the design specifications of this house took extra time and expertise to complete.
“The plasterboard linings return directly into the exterior joinery and there are no timber jamb liners,” Todd says. “It makes it all the more tricky to pull off.”
“With full height exterior joinery and internal doors, , the ceilings are continuous. More attention has to be paid to get all the levels and joins perfect with this kind of design,” Todd says.
The materials used on the exterior took a similar amount of patience and attention to get looking great. Concrete block work features again and is set against dark stained weatherboards and plenty of glass. A large portion is finished in sandstone grey colour steel cladding, capped with colour steel batons.
"It takes time to get these looking perfect," Todd says.
"We also had to work with the placement of the windows to fit seamlessly between the batons – not as easy as it looks."
Inside, large glass, cavity sliders, roll across to separate the media and family room from the other living spaces. The glass contrasts well with rawness of the stack bonded concrete blocks and has also been used extensively throughout the sleek kitchen.
When shut, the sliders allow movies to be played without disturbing the rest of the household. The room doubles as a playroom, where the three young children of the household, can be safely supervised.
On the east side of the house, there are series of stacker doors running across a whopping 11 metres. On warm days these open the kitchen, dining and living rooms to the entertainment deck and swimming pool area which also overlooks the future tennis court.
The master bedroom, en suite and a large office are located on the third floor. All come with inspiring views.
"Todd Grey Builder have recently finished building our house in Wainui South Road, Tauranga. This has been a rather unique challenge for Todd and us and an amazing achievement that it has even been complete, more-so incredible the level of craftsmanship and care evident in the finish"
